Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Functions as a member of the nursing team in providing patient care and other related activities under the direction of the registered nurse in accordance with level of training.



  • Assists in the transfer, transport and discharge of patients.
  • Records vital signs in computer.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations, i.e., CPR.
  • Performs point of care testing as directed by the Registered Nurse. Performs bladder scanning and reports results to the Registered Nurse. Accompanies telemetry monitored patients off the unit as directed by the Registered Nurse. Performs phlebotomy as directed by the Registered Nurse. Performs EKG's as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Assists, as directed, with care of patients.
  • Maintains patient's environment.
  • Prepares patients for meals and nourishment; serves and collects trays; feeds or assists with feeding, as directed; provides fresh water and in between meal nourishment.
  • Runs errands as required to meet patient care needs.
  • Stamps necessary forms and cards for patients.
  • Accurately enters I & O into computer.
  • Assists patients in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort; adheres to instructions issued by a team leader/Clinical Manager and follows established routine.
  • Adheres to universal precautions and complies with established occupational exposure policies.
  • Cleans and stores equipment, restocks supplies and checks for outdates routinely.
  • Applicant of heat and cold therapy as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Assists in utilization of patient protective mechanisms and restraints as directed. Assists with toileting; collects and labels urine and fecal specimens.
  • Gives enemas, pericare, and catheter care as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Performs other assigned work such as general cleaning of nursing unit rooms, cupboards, and refrigerators; passes clean linen/bags and collects soiled linen.
  • Carries out other related activities as required by the Hospital to ensure quality patient care.
  • Assists patients in activities of daily living.
  • Provides for recreational and/or diversional activities for patients as directed.
  • Applied TED hose and sequential compression devices as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Assists with post mortem care.
  • Takes and records temperatures, pulses, respirations, blood glucose and blood pressures; as directed by registered nurse.
  • Makes patients rounds as directed.
  • Answers nurse call system promptly and responds appropriately.
  • Assists patients into and out of bed and in turning, lifting, positioning, and ambulating.



Education and Formal Training Required: Must have high school education and is a graduate of a secondary program in Medical Assistant curriculum. Certification preferred; not required.

Specific Abilities: Participates as a Health Care Team Member by assisting with data gathering, as phlebotomist, EKG technician and hands on patient care.Must Maintain CPR Certification.Must complete ARHS Arrhythmia Recognition course within 6 months of hire.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
