University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Biomedical Engineer, Senior for the 3D Printing Program at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

This position will work Monday through Friday daylight hours, with occassional travel to UPMC Children's Hospital and other Oakland facilities as needed.


Are you interested in being a part of a cutting-edge team responsible for the development of anatomic models and surgical guides to improve patient care?  In collaboration with the Medical Director, the Biomedical Engineer, Senior will manage the UPMC 3D Printing Program to support clinical care needs.


  • Managing 3D Printing Program engineering staff
  • Managing the 3D Printing Program Quality Management System
  •  Overseeing the design, production, and delivery of patient-specific anatomic models and surgical guides
  • Leading the design, testing, manufacturing, and implementation of novel medical devices
  •  Managing relationships with referring physicians and staff to ensure needs are being met and identifies opportunities for targeted program expansion
  •  Identifying emerging technologies and industry trends
  •  Managing and coordinating ongoing 3D Printing Program research projects



  • Masters or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Biomedical, or other related Engineering
    • OR actively enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D. program with completion within 1 year of transfer or hire AND 5+ years of experience in medical device development/additive manufacturing
    • OR Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Biomedical or other related Engineering AND 7+ years of experience in medical device development/additive manufacturing.
  • Prior experience with medical 3D printing, including anatomic models and surgical guides
  • Previous experience with Quality Management Systems in medical device development including 21 CFR Part 820 and ISO 13485
  • Extensive experience identifying potential projects, evaluating resource allocation, and leading projects with cross-functional teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well, both orally and in written form
  • Preferred:Ability to work independently in a variety of software platforms used for post processing of medical imaging data such as Materialise Mimics Innovation Suite
  • An in-depth understanding of the human anatomy
  • Prior experience leading the development and implementation of Quality Management Systems
  • Experience monitoring team members and fostering professional development
  • Experience with patient-specific design medical device development all aspects of 510K submission
