The Clinical Neurophysiology Research Laboratory (CNRL) is seeking a Research Specialist. The main research goal of the CNRL is to further understand the progressive pathology and pathophysiology of emerging psychosis. We utilize multimodal imaging including concurrent electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), structural MRI, MR diffusion imaging, fMRI, and MR pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling measures of blood perfusion. The Research Specialist will work under the guidance of Dr. Dean Salisbury, and will provide assistance on clinical research studies. They will be primarily responsible for testing of psychiatrically-ill subjects and psychiatrically-well comparison subjects in imaging studies and may be responsible for the following activities: evaluating subjects, scheduling subjects for study visits, assisting in recording and analysis of EEG/MEG/MRI in patient and control subjects, basic neuropsychological test administration and scoring, and management of research databases. They will be responsible for coordinating with other research and imaging collaborators, and providing guidance to research associates and students.
This position is grant funded.
Responsibilities:
- Working under the supervision of the laboratory Investigators provides assistance on clinical research studies.
- Recruiting, scheduling, and running subjects for experiments at different locations throughout the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and Western Psychiatric Hospital.
- Answers phone calls and all inquiries related to protocol entrance, and refers participants when appropriate to staff.
- Works with Departmental recruiting core to aid participant recruitment.
- Testing control and psychiatric participants in neurophysiological studies.
- Coordinating subject testing for collaborative research measures (e.g., MRI exams).
- Preparing experimental protocols and materials, including administrative documentation.
- Maintaining data files (hard copies as well as computerized data) and analyzing data from studies.
- Uploading research data to databases.
- Assisting in the preparation of presentations and manuscripts related to the results of experiments.
- Assisting in training new research associates and students.
- Reviewing current and published articles concerning related neuroscience research.
- Managing purchasing, including ordering office and laboratory supplies.
- Administrative assistance on reimbursement, budgets, and weekly staff meetings.
- Performing in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in Psychology, Neuroscience, Sociology or related research field.
- Minimum of one year of work experience in a research project and/or related clinical setting is required.
- Familiarity with computers and common software packages required.
- Experience with EEG, MEG, or MRI preferred.
- Advanced level of knowledge in research methodologies is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Expertise with computer programs including spreadsheets, statistical packages, word-processing and graphics are preferred.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks and assignments are required.
- Careful attention to detail.
- Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for subjects’ rights and individual needs.
- Minor physical activity.
- Occasional computer connecting, requiring ability to move computers and peripherals and open computer cover.
- Occasional evening and weekend testing sessions.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CCM training is required within 30 days of hire and annually thereafter
- Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC)
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
