UPMC Health Plan is seeking a new Sr. Manager, IT Engineering to lead, mentor, and assist in managing a dynamic team with a focus on writing code and developing applications. We believe the successful candidate should possess excellent written and verbal communication, strong leadership skills, adaptability, flexibility, and can find new ways to coach, motivate, and develop your team within a growing environment. The Software Manager also takes a “hands-on” approach by participating in design decisions, code reviews, planning sessions and other technical discussions. As part of a larger organization, the IT Engineering Manager is involved in many cross-functional product and process improvement initiatives as both a team member and leader.


The Sr. Manager, IT Engineering provides leadership to the day to day operation, support, development, installation, and delivery of software engineering products and services within the Application Engineering Division. The Sr. Manager, IT Engineering is further responsible for the identification and development of talent and for managing performance to ensure business goals and objectives are met, if not exceeded.



As the Sr. Manager, IT Engineering, your responsibilities include: 

  • Proven leadership abilities across teams to address business needs for support, issue analysis, enhancements, and corrective actions.
  • Help evolve the existing software systems, infrastructure, and architecture as needed to support business growth, SLAs, and production operations for web applications, mobile, databases, and integrated software.
  • Coordinate release, sprint, and project planning with coordinated meetings as needed to ensure project tracking and completion.
  • Resolve technical problems, issues, and escalations within development team and project activities
  • Stay current with technology trends and instill a continuous learning mindset in the team.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to coach, motivate, and lead team members to their optimum performance levels and career development.
  • Maintain and monitor individual employees' performance plans.
  • Collaborate with all levels within the organization including senior leaders.
  • Occasionally design, develop and test software to maintain a good working knowledge of software development practices, technologies, tools and challenges.
  • Completes performance evaluations and coaches/mentors staff.
  • Contributes to department's short-term strategy and goals.
  • Facilitates successful completion of projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. 
  • Works in collaboration with multiple teams and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts.
  • Identify, create and apply process improvement to increase product and service quality to achieve business objectives.
  • Manages a single team function of primarily IT Engineering professionals.
  • Provides input on budget planning. 
  • Responsible for managing to budget.
  • Responsible for continuous self-study, training's, partnering with management, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. 
  • Seeks feedback from management and team for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects within department.
  • Responsible for ensuring that service is provided to the Application Engineering client community, patients, families and visitors, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures.



  • Eleven years of total related experience, with at least four years' experience in a leadership role OR equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with IT Engineering best practices, architecture, and framework.
  • Experience in a continuous improvement environment with a track record of achieving significant continual development.
  • Strong project management, problem solving, organizational, relationship, communication, and negotiation skills (oral and written) are required.
  • Strong understanding of IT strategy and how it relates to business objectives.
  • Ability to apply extensive experience to highly complex problems.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior Insurance or Healthcare background
  • Experience with Restful and Web API-based web services, JSON and knowledge of Microservices-oriented architectures build using .Net technologies
  •  Experience with responsive and adaptive web application development using JavaScript-based frameworks such as Angular 8+
  • Experience with hybrid mobile application development using Angular 8+ and frameworks such as Native Script, Ionic, React Native
  • Experience working employees and contractors remotely
