Description

Purpose:
Under the general direction of the management team, this most highly technical person is the resident expert within the DBA position for the platform(s) assigned to support. This individual works independently as needed to resolve technical issues that directly impact the database software and works with other technical team leads to resolve the most complex issues. This person aids junior staff as needed and works closely with Management on technical strategic initiatives. This person along with the Management and other experts is one of the final decision makers with major changes to processes, procedures, etc. impacting the department. This position will assume On-Call support responsibilities on a rotational basis. 100% FULLY REMOTE OPPORTUNITY 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Database Management - Support multiple implementations at various versions and support levels.
  • Install, configure and provide day to day support after implementation, including off hours as needed.
  • Advanced understanding of database design and query strategy to provide suggestions for optimal performance.
  • Quickly learns the new features of RDBMS, testing and validating within UPMC environment.
  • Skillfully implements new options or features or processes as they become available with minimal direction from management.
  • Involved with review, analysis and implementation of additional 3rd party software solutions and database add-on solutions when required.
  • Project Management - Complete DBA related tasks as they are associated with the application team and initiatives of the project.
  • Maintenance - Works closely with application teams to maintain systems with routine maintenance and patching as outlined by the RDBMS vendor through major and minor upgrades in a timely fashion as they are released.
  • Infrastructure - advanced understanding of the infrastructure on premise or cloud based.
  • Including operating system, networking and other underlying components of the infrastructure as it relates to the RDBMS supported.
  • Maintenance - Works closely with application teams to maintain systems with routine maintenance and patching as outlined by the RDBMS vendor through major and minor upgrades in a timely fashion as they are released.
  • Infrastructure - advanced understanding of the infrastructure on premise or cloud based.
  • Including operating system, networking and other underlying components of the infrastructure as it relates to the RDBMS supported.
  • Troubleshooting - Responds to tickets and other notifications of issues.
  • Resolves the most complex issues that arise, determining the cause of the database problem, determine a solution and implement the appropriate actions to correct.
  • Scripting - advanced understanding of OS based scripting, writes, enhances & debugs scripts that automate and orchestrate DBA related tasks.
  • Recovery - expert understanding of advanced business continuity and disaster recovery options for supported RDBMS.
  • Clearly communicates available options to application teams with minimal supervision.
  • Customer Service - Maintains professional relationship with application owner/teams, provide support as needed.
  • Facility a productive dialogue relative to the success of the services provided.
  • Auditing - Respond to requests from Internal Audit, external auditors as directed and SOX requirements.
  • Self-Development - Continual self-learning to master most all administrative tasks
  • Expert understanding of the architecture of the RDBMS platform and how various components can impact the system from availability to performance.
  • Performance Tuning - Performs performance/Health Checks on supported and unsupported systems as needed or as requested by Management.Skilled in database design and query strategy, advises customers to improve upon database performance with recommended changes. Mentoring - Mentors all team members and provides guidance on technical direction.
  • Expertise - Work closely with technical team lead to understand, support and communicate decisions.
  • Works with other technical team leads, RDBMS vendor, etcetera to resolve the most complex issues.

 

Qualifications

  • This individual has a proven IT background with many years of practical experience.
  • This individual has a proven track record with database work with at least 12 years of practical experience within the DBA role.
  • Understands security, encryption and vulnerability mitigation.
  • Tests, documents, implements and educates others to secure systems with new security features or best practices.
  • Supports the most mission critical systems effectively & efficiently.
  • Write and debugs the most complex scripts or queries, rewrites for performance, upgrades when necessary as it relates changes in framework or version.
  • Repeatedly takes initiative and is the go to resource for technical based questions.
  • Self-motivated and self-taught, stays on top of the technology, learning new features of the RDBM software and supporting software.
  • Teaches and educates peers, staff and management at required levels.
  • Works closely and independently with teams to understand requirements in turn uses sound judgment and provides direction to the application team in support of those requirements.
  • A primary decision maker with high visible changes to processes and procedures.
  • Proficient in communication with customers, peers and all levels of management.
  • Responds to senior and executive management as required.

CRITICAL TO ROLE: 

  • Multiple years of Oracle database, Exadata, OEM and multi-tenant support/administration experience

 

MUST HAVES: 

  • Multiple years of Microsoft SQL Server, SSAS, SSIS and SSRS support/administration experience
  • Multiple years of Oracle database, Exadata, OEM and multi-tenant support/administration experience
  • Azure SQL family experience, including Cosmos.
  • Comfortable with on prem to cloud migrations.
  • Familiar with NoSQL database management, such as MarkLogic
  • Familiar with cloud based data warehousing technologies, such as Snowflake
  • Comfortable working in an agile environment, support both COTS and home grown solutions, while working closely with engineering teams
  • Familiar with data warehousing solutions and supporting technologies/infrastructure
  • Comfortable leading discussions around technology determinations, pertaining to data storage
  • Expert in data security, performance monitoring/alerting, DR/HA solutions
