UPMC is looking to add a new Unix Services Manager to their Enterprise Technology Infrastructure Team. This role will be a hybrid work environment with flexibility on working both at home and in office. Looking for a strong leader who can effectively communicate with and support their team.

The Manager provides leadership to the day-to-day operation, support, development, installation, and delivery of technology products and services within the department or business unit. The Manager is further responsible for the identification and development of talent and for managing performance to ensure business goals and objectives are met, if not exceeded.


  • Manages a single team function of individual contributors.
  • Facilitates successful completion of projects, tasks, and initiatives by embracing a team-first approach. Works in collaboration with multiple teams and offers feedback, where appropriate, to complete individual and group efforts.
  • Identify, create and apply process improvement to increase product and service quality to achieve business objectives.
  • Responsible for ensuring that service is provided to the ISD client community, patients, families and visitors, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of all data and information through physical and electronic measures.
  • Contributes to department's short-term strategy and goals.
  • Responsible for demonstrating appropriate, clear, concise, and effective written and oral communications in all interactions to build relationships and accomplish day to day work and projects within department.
  • Responsible for continuous self-study, trainings, partnering with management, and/or seeking out opportunities to broaden scope to stay up to date with industry and organizational trends. Seeks feedback from management and team for development and effectively incorporates feedback into work and behaviors.
  • Completes performance evaluations and coaches/mentor’s staff.
  • Provides input on budget planning. Responsible for managing to budget.




  • Nine years of total related experience, with at least two years' experience in a leadership role
  • OR equivalent combination of education/experience.
  • Strong project management, problem solving, organizational, relationship, communication, and negotiation skills (oral and written) are required.
  • Strong understanding of IT strategy and how it relates to business objectives.
  • Ability to apply extensive experience to highly complex problems.

Strongly Preferred Qualifications

  • Guide the team through performance related problems and produce solutions that are dependable, modifiable, and scalable. 
  • Ensure the team works on end-user support tickets and resolve problems in a timely manner. 
  • Manage the day-to-day workload and assign Unix team engineers Incidents, Changes, Tasks and projects and ensure they are completed in a timely manner. 
  • Good understanding of systems integration to be able to design solutions that would meet the enterprise need.
  • Allocate workload to the system engineers to ensure the builds for RHEL, Appliances and AIX are completed as per the SLA.
  • Strong technical learning aptitude and be capable of working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide day-to-day direction to engineers and help prioritize Unix projects, tasks and troubleshooting events. 
  • Maintain relationships with peers from various other disciplines across the UPMC organization such as Application Owners, Infrastructure, Network, Security, etc.
  • Maintain vendor relationships and ensure maintenance contracts are paid on time by coordinating with Supply Chain and Finance. 
  • Help your director with negotiating existing or new contracts as needed.
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology trends/products to ensure UPMC is using the products that would provide the most benefit to the organization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and / or IBM AIX.
  • Some hand-on experience with Aix or Linux servers in a virtualized environment.
  • Any experience related to other Unix systems such as Fedora, Ubuntu, openSUSE would be a plus.
  • Basic knowledge about configuration management tools, such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, etc.
  • Basic Understanding of Kubernetes, RH OpenShift and / or any other container-based platform.
