UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Specimen Processor / Senior Specimen Processor

Description

UPMC St. Margaret is looking to hire a Specimen Processor or a Senior Specimen Processor to work on the Evening or Overnight shift in our Automated Testing Lab. Receive, sort, identify, process, and distribute specimens to all technical sections.  Enter requisition information and patient results into the computer system; call statistical results, answer phone, code charge slips, train new employees and perform related clerical duties.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title & salary based on their experience and education.

  • Specimen Processor salaries start at $15.16/hr.
  • Senior Specimen Processor salaries start at $15.22/hr. 

 

Specimen Processor Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate service orientation approach by conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude in work situations.  Show initiative and offer assistance in the completion of the department's work. Monitor pneumatic tube and courier deliveries to ensure timely processing of specimens.
  • Receive, sort and prioritize ALL specimens according to the laboratory policies. Share specimens as necessary.  Notify supervisor of problems and of any requests that need credited or clarified.
  • Verify patient specimens such as blood, urine and other body fluids with requisitions or labels, making certain that information on the specimens match any paperwork received and correct specimen. Properly request in the Laboratory Information System laboratory information system if needed. Prepare, package and send specimens to outside locations as needed.
  • Investigate and resolve any requesting mistakes or other specimen problems.  Request assistance when needed. Complete quality forms for unacceptable specimens, requesting errors or other problems. Separate by centrifugation.  Label appropriate aliquot tubes and transfer as defined by policy; store samples at the appropriate temperature.
  • Determine and enter the specimen receive time into the computer.  Answer all telephone inquiries concerning proper specimen collection, result, and normal range information. Follow all regulations regarding health and safety concerning the handling of biohazardous patient samples or sharps to prevent exposure.
  • Disinfect the work area after shift and during shift, if needed.  Participates in the orientation and training of new laboratory specimen processors.  Perform routine technical and related clerical duties as directed.

Senior Specimen Processor Responsibilities:

  • Participates in or conducts special projects or time studies by request. Collects, records and analyzes processing data.
  • All duties of a Specimen Processor including: Demonstrates service orientation approach by conveying courtesy, respect, enthusiasm and a positive attitude in work situations. Shows initiative and offers assistance in the completion of the department's work.
  • Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available for efficient operations, inventory supplies and informs supervisor of needs.
  • Provides advice and/or assistance to new employees and co-workers in the performance of non-routine/difficult duties. Trouble shoots and helps resolve complex specimen problems to promote quality assurance.
  • Participates in hospital committees and lab work groups
  • Maintains a solid/strong or higher rating (preferred) during annual Performance Appraisals, with no marginal ratings. No active corrective actions.
  • Assists management in ensuring that processing duties are performed according to procedures and established guidelines
  • Performs non-lab activities as required (such as Specimen Registrations) and maintains competency for assigned procedures.
  • Organizes and processes research studies according to policy where required. Coordinates processing of specimens sent to reference laboratories.
  • Able to competently manage 85% of any processing responsibilities. Preferable to be proficient in 100%.

 

Qualifications

Specimen Processor Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Three to six months of experience in a clinical laboratory, physician's office, or other medical environment preferred, including knowledge of or experience in Medical Terminology and Laboratory Information Laboratory information systems.
  • Good oral and written communication skills required. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations of external and internal customers (as well as co-workers) both by telephone and in person.

Senior Specimen Processor Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Two years of experience as a laboratory specimen processor (preferably in the host laboratory) in order to acquire a thorough knowledge of sectional policies and procedures.
  • Effective troubleshooting and interpersonal skills.
