  • 1-2 years of experience: $12,000 sign-on bonus with a two-year work commitment; $17,000 with a three-year commitment

UPMC Travel Staffing is seeking Surgical Technologists, with one year experience, interested in joining our team to support the Ambulatory Surgical Centers in Southwestern PA. As a UPMC Travel Staffing employee, you will experience travel and flexibility, rotating to a new ambulatory surgery center every 4 weeks, based on the needs of the surgery center. You will be supported by nurse leaders across the business units and have development and career opportunities by working in new service lines, with different state of the art equipment across diverse patient populations and geographical locations. Working as a Surgical Technologist supporting our Ambulatory Surgical Centers, you will have no nightshift, holiday, or on-call requirements (exclusively Mon. - Fri. daylight shifts)

 

Responsibilities:

  • Constructively receive feedback and direction. Identify and communicate learning needs to appropriate manager. Serve as a resource for staff and other disciplines. Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance based on feedback or on self-identified developmental needs. Prior to performing new or challenging skills, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to function in two specialty areas of surgical services. Communicate educational needs when necessary. Maintain contact availability for schedule changes when needed. Must be flexible in scheduling to the requirements of the unit assigned.
  • Function independently with one day orientation, unless otherwise specified. Maintain critical thinking skills, analytical and problem solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care. Cultivate professional relationships and communication in the clinical environment.
  • Strictly adhere to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information.
  • Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique. Perform work in a timely and productive manner
  • Preparation of operating room prior to operational services by preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure functionality.
  • Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites.
  • Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
  • Assist in transfer of patients to the operating room and on and off surgical table, help position them on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments according to policy.
  • After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
  • Maintain critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of surgical technology.
  • Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
  • Establish appropriate, assertive and professional communication strategies. Strengthen interdisciplinary relationships with members of the health care team. Coordinate interdepartmental activities to expedite care.
  • During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) required. Staff employed to practice surgical technology by the health care facility on or before the effective date of the law (12/28/2020) or who were employed as a surg tech at another health care facility two years before effective date of the law are grandfathered and therefore not required to have certification. New graduates of a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation can work for six months prior to certification, but must be certified within six months of program completion.
  • Completion of a formal surgical technician program offered by a community or junior college, vocational school, university, hospital or the military.
  • PA legislature House Bill 81 enacted 10/29/2020 and became effective 12/28/2020: Must have completed program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintains certification or Has completed appropriate military training program or Maintains certification from accredited program or Was employed as a surg tech in a health care facility on or before effective date of the act (12/28/2020) or Employed as a surg tech at another health care facility two years before effective date (12/28/2020).
  • Continuing education requirements: Compliance with continuing ed requirements specified by the credentialing organization for certification.  For individuals not certified - must complete 30 hours of continuing ed every two years.
  • Demonstrated competence in operating room as surgical technologist.
  • Minimum of 1-year operating room experience is required.
  • Must be able to independently scrub for general, orthopedic and ophthalmic surgeries.
  • Must be able to scrub in at least 1 additional specialty, included but not limited to plastics, gynecology, endoscopic GI, and ENT procedures .
  • The ability to scrub in any specialty is highly preferred.
  • Must work 36 hours per week, 72 hours in a bi-weekly pay period.
  • Must be willing to work 8-, 10- and 12-hour shifts, depending on need to operating room assigned.
  • Must travel to all ambulatory UPMC facilities in Southwest PA including but not limited to Sugical Center Bethel Park, West Mifflin, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh- North, Pittsburgh at Shadyside Hospital, and Pittsburgh at Harmar.
  • Must rotate assignments on a 4 week basis with potential to redeploy to another facility mid-assignment.
  • Cerner or Epic electronic health record experience preferred.

Licensure/Clearances:

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting
