Lead Cytotechnologist


UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is hiring a full-time Lead Cytotechnologist to join the Cytology Lab team!  This role will be scheduled for daylight shifts, Monday through Friday, and will rotate to UPMC Mercy hospital as needed. No weekends or holidays are required!

  • Perform final sign-out of diagnoses on the majority of Pap tests.
  • Render diagnosis for consideration by Pathologist on all other cell samples and mark diagnostic areas on slide.
  • Correlate pertinent clinical history and obtain it when necessary as well as correlate current case with previous cytologic and/or surgical specimens.
  • Enter diagnoses on all patient cases in the Pathology Information System and sign out negative Pap tests.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of cytologic criteria and keep abreast of current developments in the field of cytotechnology.
  • Perform all responsibilities according to the philosophy of the UPMC Health System such that the needs of our customers are fulfilled.
  • Interact with all laboratory customers courteously and professionally; respond to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, quality assurance, safety, compliance and personnel policies.
  • Perform evaluation of cell samples according to established protocols with accuracy in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Assure staff compliance with required instrument maintenance protocols to maximize instrument operation and assure consistent specimen quality outcomes
  • Responsible for overseeing lab supplies and ordering supplies.
  • Performs lab send-outs for patient testing.
  • Responsible for ensuring and maintaining quality control and quality assurance measures in the laboratory.
  • Identify problems with instrumentation, methodology, specimens, supplies, or results and take appropriate action.
  • Operate and maintain equipment within the scope of training utilizing defined schedules and written instructions to perform quality control checks, preventive maintenance, and calibration.
  • Perform minor repairs. Perform responsibilities as 60% technical bench duties and 40% lead specialist duties.
  • Assist the Manager with the department staff annual performance evaluations by providing objective feedback, concurrently, retrospectively and completing a peer review written evaluation as part of the annual performance management review process.
  • Interview and participate in the skills assessment of job applicants.
  • Assume responsibility for first-line supervision of the section/department in the absence of the manager.
  • Train and orient new employees, students and residents, as applicable and as assigned.
  • Assist with being inspection ready according to standards set by the College of American Pathologists.
  • Review and update policies/ procedures and compose new policies/procedures as assigned by manager.
  • Responsible for creating amended reports for both cytotechnologists and pathologists.
  • Perform quality control re-screening on Pap tests and perform final sign out or turn in to Pathologist for review.
  • Present cytology conferences; assist with clinical administrative functions.
  • Participate in special research projects as requested; conduct, direct, or assist with procedure development and methodology/equipment evaluation and selection and implementation.
  • Assist with the collection of fine needle aspirations and other specimens as necessary following established procedures
  • Oversee and assist with problem-solving of staining and cytopreparatory procedures; perform cytopreparation, staining and clerical functions as necessary.
  • Assists pathologists with problem-solving various types of issues related to patient testing.
  • Performs various administrative functions including but not limited to cytohistologic correlations, statistics and related laboratory records.
  • Participate in various hospital committees representing pathology.
  • Uses independent judgement and discretion in making decisions regarding the laboratory.



  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university required.
  • Successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Cytotechnology program required
  • 3 years of experience as a Cytotechnologist required.
  • Pathology Information System experience preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Maintenance of SCT(ASCP) certification is required through continuing education credits.
  • Analytical skills necessary to make decisions related to patient testing.
