UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

The Lead Pharmacy Technician, under the direction and supervision of a pharmacist, will assist in the preparation, dispensing, charging, and delivery of medications to patients. Also, the lead pharmacy technician provides leadership and serves as a role model for other pharmacy technicians during the performance of daily pharmacy activities. Patients served include all age groups.



  • Consistently demonstrates professionalism by displaying flexibility, positive attitude, respect for individuals and commitment to the organization, department, profession, and patient. Consistently delivers high quality, accurate work in a timely manner. Effectively utilizes resources and identifies opportunities to improve efficiencies in the department. Consistently demonstrates leadership. Acts as a role model for fellow technicians in performing daily tasks as well as initiating supplemental duties. Daily contact with Nursing Departmental Personnel, other departmental hospital personnel, physicians, and other Pinnacle Health System employees.
  • Completes annual Technician II project as outlined in the Technician II program and any additional projects assigned by Pharmacy Leadership. Consistently communicates in a courteous and professional manner when interacting with customers and coworkers. Respects confidentiality and established boundaries when providing information. Consistently reports any issues or problems to a manager as soon as possible. Consistently displays teamwork by actively supporting departmental changes, assisting coworkers willingly and proactively assisting new employees. Assures work for each shift is completed prior to departure.
  • Works on pharmacy technician work schedule as assigned. Reassigns technician work duties on a daily basis to compensate for unforseen issues. Acts as a ?role model? for other technicians and students with regard to work habits, job performance, attitude and professionalism. Completes all special projects assigned in a reasonable time period. Once assigned, assumes repsonsibility for these projects until complete. Demonstrates flexibility in work assignment and location.
  • Promotes Mission, Vision and Values of Pinnacle Health System. Participates in Performance Improvement as it relates to the department. Willingly travels among Pinnacle Health facilities when necessary and as directed to complete assigned Pharmacy activities. Assures that fellow technicians and students are properly trained with regard to all pharmacy operations. Assures that training schedules and checklists are scheduled and completed in a timely manner including baseline competencies. Takes a lead role in determining and implementing technician workflow.
  • Fills and replaces medications to automated dispensing cabinets. Assists in training employees and pharmacy students with regard to work procedures. Completes all necessary documentation including medication credits, charge forms and various logs according to departmental procedures. Maintains Pharmacy in a clean, orderly and safe manner by restocking shelves, cleaning work stations, returning medications to stock, etc. Proactively reviews and researches current pharmacy practice guidelines in their area of focus. Monitors pharmacy medication usage to predict future needs and alerts Pharmacy Leadership of any issues. Participates in special projects as required or assigned. Performs related duties as required or assigned.
  • Prepares and labels non-sterile compounds and other required products. Performs necessary calculations. Completes all necessary documentation. Repackages medications as necessary and completes all required documentation. Understands and complies with handling procedures for controlled substances. Proactively and continuously answers the telephone, waits on customers, and checks the pneumatic tube station. Fills and delivers interdepartmental orders. Completes all necessary documentation. Inspects medications in assigned areas (i.e. Pharmacy, patient care units, procedural areas, and off-site areas). Removes expired or recalled medications and completes documentation. Demonstrates an understanding and ability to use current equipment, including pneumatic tube, fax machines, printers, computers, automated dispensing cabinets, telephones, etc.
  • Accurately prepares and labels medications for dispensing or distribution under the supervision of the pharmacist. Initials after filling all orders and ensures a pharmacist review before dispensing. Delivers medications to patient care units, and transfers/removes appropriate medications when necessary. Properly labels pre-made IV solutions and admixtures. Prepares and labels IV admixtures and other sterile products. Performs necessary calculations. Demonstrates an understanding of and utilizes proper aseptic technique. Once trained, prepares specialty products such as chemotherapy, epidurals, etc. under the direction of a pharmacist.


  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) obtained and maintained including required continuing education credits.
  • Employment experience required (one of the following is required):
    • Minimum of three years continuous experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician in the Pinnacle Health Pharmacy Department and must be a Pharmacy Technician II for at least one consecutive year
      • OR
    • A minimum of five years health-system pharmacy experience with previous leadership or supervisory experience.
    • HS Degree required.
    • College degree preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
Clearances must be dated within 5 years

  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
