The Senior Manager of Market Intelligence coordinates all activities related to gathering, analyzing, and disseminating market research and competitive-related research projects for the Insurance Services Division!  This position manages key annual studies and longitudinal analyses to provide support for the needs of various parts of the organization. This role coordinates and manages the activities of a small team of research analysts whose main function is preparing ad hoc projects to better understand various aspects of the health insurance industry.

The focus and function of this role is to constantly assess the dynamics of consumers, business decision-makers, key markets served, and the competitors in those markets. Established market dynamics, as well as innovative and disruptive forces, are monitored and reported to appropriate levels within the organization. Research conducted by this team is relied upon and utilized by the CEO, as well as leadership teams from all lines of business and functional areas. The position reports to Senior Director of Market Intelligence.

The ideal candidate will have prior market analysis experience with knowledge of the health insurance industry and familiarity with health insurance products. This is a hybrid role with significant opportunity for remote work!


  • Senior Manager of Market Intelligence acts as a subject-matter expert on state-of-the-art approaches to obtaining secondary research through appropriate, valid methodologies.
  • It is crucial to remain aware of and inquire about the latest tools and methodologies for performing secondary market intelligence research.
  • Requires the ability to be agile with respect to alternative methodologies while maintaining the highest possible levels of accuracy and data integrity.
  • Act as the key contact with external vendors used to provide syndicated data and analysis, and to conduct proprietary studies for the ISD.
  • This role requires the ability to efficiently manage a substantial budget allocated for professional services utilized to perform essential projects.
  • This role also works with legal and compliance teams to negotiate contracts that ensure a benefit to the organization.
  • Serve as nexus point for gathering ongoing input from internal and external teams, such as sales and marketing, and brokers to continuously enhance and refine deliverables.
  • In this role, experience with and knowledge of health care, health insurance, and workplace solutions are invaluable.
  • A key role for the Senior Manager is to partner with internal stakeholders, development teams, and departments to gain a strong understanding of UPMC Health Plan products and consumers, and the business needs to support both segments.
  • The research performed by this team is a key component of the assessment of the success of many organizational initiatives. 
  • Develop an understanding of the strategies, product/service offerings, mindset of key competitors, and industry change drivers, and assess competitive strengths and weaknesses of key competitors.
  • The work provided by market analysis function is an essential step in the development of new products and service initiatives.
  • Internal product development and consumer innovation teams rely heavily on the accurate execution of research studies.
  • Act as the principal spokesperson for and presenter of work products developed by the team.
  • A critical function of this role is to synthesize complex data into accessible results that can be easily embraced by the audiences.
  • Presentations to audiences at all levels within the organization may be required.
  • Manage all competitive-related research projects and coordinate the work of the team to ensure timely, accurate, high-quality work products are delivered on a consistent basis.
  • Develop and maintain efficient methods of disseminating and storing findings to appropriate audiences, from senior leadership to all ISD staff.
  • Manage and report on key business intelligence metrics such as population demographics, market share by line of business, advertising and marketing activity, new product/service innovations, etc.
  • Alert relevant stakeholders to important new developments in their markets as they happen.
  • Work independently on projects and, from time to time, with little direction from manager.



  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, or equivalent.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • 7 years of hands-on experience coordinating large-scale competitive intelligence research studies gathering, synthesizing, and reporting on key market/competitive metrics using both primary and secondary research tools.
  • Must be experienced in evaluating methodology alternatives, developing questionnaires, sampling methodologies, basic statistical analysis, and reporting.
  • Health insurance industry experience preferred.
  • Comfortable with coordinating and incorporating relevant input from key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated ability to synthesize data into actionable information.
  • Ability to work with databases and analytical tools. 
  • Experience in preparing market evaluations and analysis for senior management.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, the intensity to focus on small details, and the talent to think big-picture.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with the Internet and MS Office tools, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge and experience with online survey tools.
  • Ability to support and manage internal clients across various business units.
  • Self-starter mentality, with an ability to work independently on projects.
  • Experience working with minimal direction, with a keen ability to leverage business sense to guide decision making.
