Director of Veterinary Services


The Director of Veterinary Services will serve as the Attending Veterinarian at Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation. The incumbent will provide management and oversight of the animal facilities at the Magee-Womens Research Institute (MWRI) in accordance with management, regulatory, and accrediting agency rules and guidelines to provide support for the animal research programs at MWRI as well as work with the researchers to enhance the research and teaching missions of MWRI.This position works closely with the MWRI facilities and operations team and IACUC to provide veterinary expertise and training to investigators, animal care staff, and technical staff in the form of formal instruction and ongoing guidance.



  • 1. Maintain compliance with laboratory animal care standards and regulatory requirements; ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, and policies to maintain AAALAC accreditation of the animal care and use program and facilities; revise and develop required security practices for the different species and research protocols; serve on IACUC Committee and attend all IACUC meetings.
  • 2. Oversee the laboratory animal program?s expenses and budget.
  • 3. Hire, train, and supervise animal care staff; conduct performance evaluations, and ensure completion of competencies of department staff.
  • 4. As a leader at MWRI, provide strategic recommendations and direct to ensure that MWRI?s animal research facilities and infrastructure continue to support cutting edge scientific research.
  • 5. Provide veterinary medical diagnostic, surgical, and/or treatment services within the animal facilities, including oversight of quarantine procedures.
  • 6. Oversee the animal husbandry program including quarantine procedures.
  • 7. Develop and provide training and guidance to animal users and animal technicians in animal procedures, anesthetics, euthanasia, and other matters as required, including development of a robust animal facility user training program that includes validation of skills.
  • 8. Develop proposals for enhancing the laboratory animal program, animal facilities, and infrastructure.
  • 9. Collaborate closely with the MWRI Business Office in decisions regarding financial oversight of facility services.
  • Provide 24 hours a day, 7 days-a-week coverage for veterinary care (except for when back- up care is arranged for) for all animals housed in the animal facilities.
  • 11. Serve on the IACUC, including assisting in education of IACUC members, as well as review of all protocols.
  • 12. Recommend, draft, and implement Standard Operating Procedures and policies in support of superb animal care and use.
  • 13. Partner with investigators to develop optimal animal care and use protocols to ensure excellent animal care and scientific progress.
  • 14. Perform other duties as assigned.



KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE/REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT:1. DVM/VMD degree from an institution accredited by the AVMA or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA is required.2. Licensed in the US and eligibility for PA state license is required.3. Experience with both non-human primate as well as other USDA covered species husbandry and with rodent colonies is required.4. Successful demonstration of the completion of the competencies required by the department/unit.5. This individual must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the animals served by his/her assigned unit as specified below. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of growth and development of animals over their life span is required. Candidates must have the ability to assess data reflective of the status of animals and interpret the information needed to identify each animals requirements relative to its age-specific needs and to provide the appropriate care to each animal.SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:1. Demonstrated analytical, interpersonal, and organizational skills.2. Demonstrated experience with the regulatory aspects of animal welfare 3. Proven record of management of an animal research program is strongly preferred.WORKING CONDITIONS:1. Occasional risk of animal bites/scratches.2.
