COVID-19 Vaccination Information

Across UPMC, our guiding principle is to always prioritize the safety of our employees, patients, and members. UPMC believes that vaccination is important, helps protect all, and advocates that everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated.

UPMC complies with all governmental requirements related to local, state, and federal COVID-19 vaccination for employment. The Jan. 13 Supreme Court of the United States decision that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services federal COVID-19 vaccine mandate will move forward requires UPMC to ensure employees either get vaccinated or receive a requested medical or religious exemption.

Poison Specialty Nurse

Our team of nurses takes part in the day-to-day medical consultation and follow-ups for all cases of poison exposure that have been referred to our hospital.   • Serve as a resource to and interact routinely with patients, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other healthcare professionals, business and industry clients, other resource agencies, and other poison and drug information personnel.
  • Receive telephone calls from or concerning poisoned persons. Request and record pertinent data to analyze toxicity problems and determine the type and severity of the exposure.
  • Function effectively in emergency and often life-threatening situations.
  • Document activities through required documentation systems, departmental reports, and quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Provide and documents recommendations that positively affect patient outcome.
  • When answering poison information questions, recommends corrective measures, and initiates treatment actions as needed. Refer poisoned victims to health care facilities when appropriate.
  • Support poison center-related research. Maintain expertise in the area(s) of practice through the continual learning experience.
  • Interact with poisoned victims or other concerned individuals during periods of acute duress, calm the caller and elicit accurate information concerning the emergent situation.
  • Provide evidence-based general and patient-specific poison information in a continuous manner taking into account the age and clinical condition of each patient.




  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse
  • Minimum of 2 years of RN experience required.
  • ED, ICU, OR or proven exposure to toxicology events required.
  • Emergency medicine, critical care, or toxicology experience is preferred.
  • Previous poison center experienced preferred Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • CSPI certification from the AAPCC preferred must obtain within 2 years of starting the role.
