UPMC provides real-world experience to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students each year. We offer a variety of summer internship opportunities and full-time leadership development rotation programs in both the business and clinical sectors.

Corporate Fields

Summer Associates Program

11-week paid intership | Open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students

With a variety of programs in divisions such as Corporate, Insurance, and Health Services, the Summer Associates Program is a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in your field and exposure to real-world business opportunities. Administrative Summer Residency Program

500-hour, full-time paid internship | Open to graduate students

The Summer Residency Program exposes you to high-level executives as you gain practical management experience. You will work under the supervision of a preceptor at the executive administrative level or above, and you will be invited to apply to the post-graduate Administrative Fellowship upon completion of the program.

Administrative Fellowship Program

2-year paid program | Open to graduate-level students | Learn more

As a fellow, you will spend your first year rotating with executive-level leadership, participating in various projects, meetings, and initiatives through a variety of core functional rotations. The second year is flexible and allows you to spend time working in an area of interest or organizational need.


Clinical and Research Fields

Summer Student Nurse Internship

10-week paid internship | Open to nursing students | Learn more and apply

Explore your future profession while building on the skills and knowledge gained in the classroom, networking with nursing professionals, and developing your professionalism in nursing. You’ll attend educational sessions and provide direct patient care with the guidance of a trained preceptor, working up to 40 hours per week at your designated hospital. You’ll spend one week in orientation and split the rest of the summer between a complex, acute care unit along with a specialty area (unless you apply to the OR, senior communities, or home health opportunities).

Student Research Training Program

8-week paid program | Open to undergraduate and graduate students | Learn more

Learn the rationale, design strategies, and methods of biomedical research as a research assistant. Complete a research project under the direct supervision of experienced researchers, and present the results of your research to your peers, mentors and the research community.


Clinical Neurophysiology Program

Paid program | Open to juniors and seniors majoring in neuroscience, kinesiology, biology, or related field | Learn more and apply

Supported by a world-class team of neurophysiologists and neurotechnologists, you will gain hands-on clinical experience and attend didactic lectures and educational training concurrent with CNIM certification principals. You will be exposed to every discipline that employs intraoperative monitoring.

Finance Management Rotation (FMR) Program

3-year paid program | Open to recent graduates with majors in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a related field with a cumulative GPA or 3.2 or greater | Learn more and apply

In this immersive leadership development program, explore your finance and accounting interests during three one-year rotations. Gain broad exposure to UPMC’s operations and prepare for a leadership role at UPMC.

Information Services Division Rotation (ISDR) Program

2-year paid program | Open to recent graduates with majors in computer science, information technology, or a related field with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater | Learn more and apply

During four six-month rotations across multiple divisions in Health Services, Corporate Services, and Insurance Services, you’ll work on rewarding projects that directly affect UPMC’s operations and patient care. Learn more about past participants’ experiences on the ISDR blog.

Externships

Are you looking for work experience in exchange for academic credit? UPMC partners with many educational institutions to offer externships. Educational institutions are encouraged to work directly with Volunteer Services, education offices, and their professional connections for placements. Student Experience Agreements are required. Questions about these agreements can be directed to studentagreements@upmc.edu.

Medical Students

UPMC offers residencies and fellowships for medical students in a variety of locations, departments, and specialties. If you are a medical student who would like to do rotation at UPMC, work with your academic institution to ensure an agreement is in place. Learn more.

Graduate Nurses

Gradate nurses are welcome to apply to any staff nurse or professional staff nurse position. All newly hired graduate nurses are automatically enrolled in the My Residency Program. The My Residency Program is designed to help you develop the skills to move successfully into the role of a professional nurse. Learn more about beginning your career as a nurse at UPMC.
