UPMC Hamot’s Women’s Hospital is looking for a Professional Staff Nurse! 

This position is full-time rotating days and nights and will support the entire Women’s Hospital.

Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience.

The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and an integral member of the care delivery team. This role is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered nursing care while setting and upholding standards of practice. The Professional Staff Nurse exercises independent clinical judgment and is accountable for the coordination, delivery, and evaluation of nursing care for patients and their families. This position emphasizes leadership, collaboration, and partnership across the interdisciplinary team to achieve optimal patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care, while demonstrating a commitment to the nursing profession and the community served.

Responsibilities

Quality and Patient Experience

  • Actively participates in unit- or department-based quality improvement initiatives.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve patient outcomes, safety, and satisfaction.

  • Applies research and evidence-based practice to enhance clinical care and influence care planning.

  • Contributes to multidisciplinary discussions and supports continuous improvement efforts.

Patient-Centered Care

  • Applies the nursing process within a Relationship-Based Care framework to promote a healing environment.

  • Develops and implements individualized plans of care in partnership with patients and families.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking to address clinical, psychosocial, safety, and spiritual needs.

  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

  • Maintains accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation to support continuity of care.

Collaboration and Professional Practice

  • Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families.

  • Models accountability, professionalism, and respect in all interactions.

  • Demonstrates cultural awareness and supports a healthy, inclusive work environment.

  • Identifies and communicates safety concerns to promote a safe workplace.

Leadership and Shared Governance

  • Actively participates in shared governance, unit-based initiatives, and goal setting.

  • Supports change and quality improvement efforts within the practice environment.

  • Serves as an engaged partner on the care team and willingly assists colleagues as needed.

  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Education and Professional Development

  • Maintains accountability for ongoing professional development and clinical competence.

  • Applies adult learning principles when educating patients, families, students, and staff.

  • Provides clear, effective education to support patient transitions of care.

  • Supports onboarding and development of new staff and students and may serve as a preceptor.

  • Seeks and incorporates feedback to continuously improve professional practice.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care to the patient populations served by the assigned unit.

  • Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan, with the ability to assess and interpret patient data to meet age-specific needs in accordance with department policies and procedures.

  • Zero to two (0–2) years of nursing experience required.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive, professional relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients and families.

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, complex environment while managing multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Demonstrated clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills related to patient care.

  • Ability to lead and support others in the application of the nursing process.

  • Physical requirements include mobility, visual and manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

Work Schedule Options

UPMC offers a variety of flexible scheduling options. In addition to traditional rotating or flexible shifts, specialty programs are available for primarily night or weekend shifts and include premium pay differentials.

  • Eligibility for these programs requires a minimum of six (6) months of nursing experience.

  • Orientation may be required during regular business hours.

  • Candidates interested in these options should notify their recruiter during the interview process.


Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located or a multistate license issued by a participating Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) state.

  • Temporary Practice Permit (TPP) accepted, where applicable.

  • Graduate Nurses must successfully complete the RN licensure examination within six (6) months of hire or within one (1) year of graduation, whichever occurs first. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination or demotion at the discretion of the business unit.

  • CPR/BLS certification required based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.

  • UPMC-approved national certification preferred.

*Employees working under an out-of-state NLC license who later establish residency in the state where the facility is located must apply for state licensure within 60 days of residency change.
