Responsibilities

• Assist in filling medication orders using proper labeling, counting, and stocking practices; ensure products are initialed and dated as required.
• Prepare oral and injectable medications (including IV admixtures and Total Parenteral Nutrition) for the correct patient and time using proper technique.
• Demonstrate consistent ability to work in sterile product areas, including preparation of cytotoxic and hazardous drugs (e.g., chemotherapy) using appropriate aseptic technique.
• Participate in medication distribution, including cassettes, emergency medication carts, and controlled substances in accordance with department policy and regulatory requirements.
• Retrieve discontinued medications and return them to appropriate pharmacy areas; process credits when applicable.
• Develop and maintain positive, productive service relationships during the medication distribution process.
• Assist with procurement, accountability, storage, preparation, and distribution of investigational and study drugs.
• Communicate effectively with hospital personnel, patients, and visitors (via phone, in person, or written); refer drug information questions to pharmacy staff.
• Ensure medications are stored safely and securely in compliance with Department of Health, Joint Commission, and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and adequately stocked work environment.
• Practice proper hand hygiene in both pharmacy and patient care areas.
• Utilize computer systems to process and maintain patient information and pharmacy records.
• Maintain required documentation (e.g., eyewash logs, refrigerator logs, perpetual inventory logs).
• Process sales using the cash register and follow proper cash handling procedures.
• Comply with all federal and state laws (e.g., HIPAA), regulations (e.g., OSHA), and PBM requirements (e.g., FWA, CMS).
• Maintain pharmacy computer systems and patient records as required.
• Procure and maintain appropriate inventory levels in stock rooms, carousels, and automated dispensing systems.
• Maintain and update automated medication stations, unit stock, emergency boxes, and crash carts.
• Assist in training pharmacy personnel and students.
• Demonstrate accuracy in maintaining controlled substance records and distribution processes.
• Audit and maintain controlled substance records, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and departmental regulations.
• Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives to enhance pharmacy operations and patient care outcomes.
