Professional Staff Nurse – Labor & Delivery
UPMC Hamot
UPMC Hamot is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Labor & Delivery team.
Position Details:
- Full-time, 36 hours per week
- Rotating day/night shifts
- Includes weekends and holidays
- Requires on-call hours in addition to regularly scheduled shifts
- 1-2 years of RN experience required
- Title and starting pay rate will be based on years of experience and qualifications
Purpose:
The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and key member of the care delivery team, responsible for providing high-quality patient care while setting standards for excellence in nursing practice. This role assumes responsibility, authority, and accountability for patient care delivery through the application of clinical judgment, collaboration, communication, and leadership.
The Professional Staff Nurse manages care for patients and their families, working closely with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to achieve optimal patient outcomes across the continuum of care. This position emphasizes leadership, partnership, collaboration, and professional development while maintaining a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and interdisciplinary team members through accountability, professionalism, and effective communication.
- Foster an inclusive and respectful work environment by demonstrating cultural awareness and promoting healthy workplace relationships.
- Support patient, family, student, and staff education through the application of adult learning principles and evidence-based teaching practices.
- Serve as a mentor or preceptor, supporting the development of students, new staff members, and colleagues.
- Apply the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment and deliver patient-centered care.
- Develop individualized plans of care that address patients’ clinical, social, psychological, spiritual, and safety needs.
- Utilize critical thinking and sound clinical judgment to assess patient conditions and recommend appropriate interventions.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation to support continuity of care and effective communication among caregivers.
- Promote patient safety, quality outcomes, and patient satisfaction by incorporating professional standards, organizational goals, and best practices into care delivery.
- Create a compassionate, patient-focused experience by building meaningful relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrate accountability for ongoing professional growth and actively participate in shared governance, quality initiatives, and practice improvement efforts.
- Serve as an engaged member of the care team by collaborating with colleagues, supporting change initiatives, and contributing to a positive practice environment.
- Participate in unit- and department-specific quality improvement activities, identifying opportunities to enhance patient care and operational effectiveness.
- Utilize research and evidence-based practice to improve clinical outcomes, contribute to multidisciplinary discussions, and influence patient care planning.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- BSN preferred.
- 0-2 years of nursing experience required.
- Demonstrated ability to provide age-appropriate care and effectively interact with patients across the lifespan.
- Knowledge of growth and development principles and the ability to assess, interpret, and respond to patient needs based on age-specific requirements.
- Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to apply and lead others in the nursing process.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with physicians, providers, leaders, staff, patients, and families.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, complex healthcare environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to safely operate specialized equipment and perform the physical demands of the position, including frequent standing, walking, lifting, and positioning of patients.
- Mobility, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
Flexible Scheduling Opportunities
UPMC offers a variety of flexible scheduling options in addition to traditional rotating shifts. Specialized programs are available for nurses interested in primarily night shift or weekend shift schedules and include premium pay differentials.
To qualify for these programs, employees must have a minimum of six months of nursing experience and may be required to complete orientation during regular business hours. Candidates interested in these opportunities should notify their recruiter during the interview process.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
Required:
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located, or a multistate license recognized through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), where applicable.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification based on American Heart Association (AHA) standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within one year of hire or transfer into the department.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification within one year of hire or transfer into the department.
- Act 33 Clearance
- Act 34 Clearance
- Act 73 FBI Clearance
Preferred:
- UPMC-approved national nursing certification.
Graduate Nurse Requirements:
Graduate Nurses must successfully complete the RN licensure examination within six months of hire or one year of graduation, whichever occurs first. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination or demotion from the Graduate Nurse position at the discretion of the business unit.
Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC):
Employees practicing under an out-of-state multistate license who establish residency in the state where the facility is located must apply for licensure in that state within 60 days of establishing residency.
