UPMC Mercy Pre/Post RN (General OR)

Join the UPMC Mercy Surgical Services team as a Pre/Post Registered Nurse supporting our busy General Operating Room. In this role, you’ll play an essential part in the surgical patient journey by preparing patients for procedures, supporting pre-operative nerve blocks, and providing discharge care and education following Phase II recovery. Working alongside a collaborative interdisciplinary team, you’ll have the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes while advancing your nursing career.

This full-time position works four 10-hour shifts per week with primarily daylight hours, minimal weekend requirements, and no call responsibilities, offering an excellent work-life balance. We also offer an Inpatient Career Ladder to support professional growth and career advancement, along with up to a $15,000 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates who commit to two years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience required
  • Critical care experience highly preferred
  • Strong assessment, communication, and patient education skills
  • Passion for providing exceptional perioperative patient care

Responsibilities

  • Identifies opportunities to improve clinical quality and the work environment. Integrates evidence-based practice into daily professional practice and serves on or leads teams that implement innovations to enhance patient care and promote a healthy workforce.
  • Serves as a role model for professional nursing practice through recognized leadership in areas such as clinical expertise, education, specialty resource nursing, and evidence-based practice. Provides constructive feedback to members of the healthcare team and actively participates in the nursing peer review process.
  • Promotes change that improves patient care quality and the unit environment. Participates in and leads successful teams as part of daily practice. Demonstrates advanced clinical assessment and analytical skills within the framework of Relationship-Based Care. Actively engages in shared governance at the unit level and contributes to hospital-wide councils.
  • Demonstrates a passion for developing others by enthusiastically and effectively precepting students, graduate nurses, and new hires. Evaluates clinical and behavioral situations to identify learning opportunities that improve patient care. Regularly seeks feedback, applies it to professional growth, and supports continuous learning by sharing research, professional resources, presentations, and journal club activities.
  • Applies the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment. Develops daily goals and individualized plans of care in partnership with patients, taking a holistic approach to their needs. Communicates effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team, advocating for and recommending appropriate changes to care plans and unit practices.
  • Maintains comprehensive and accurate patient documentation that promotes continuity of care and effective communication among caregivers. Demonstrates critical thinking when addressing clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual patient care needs. Supports patient safety, quality, and patient experience initiatives by incorporating organizational and professional goals into daily practice.
  • Creates a compassionate, patient-centered experience by building strong, healing relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Fosters a healthy work environment by building and strengthening professional relationships among colleagues. Demonstrates cultural awareness and actively addresses workplace issues such as horizontal violence and impairment. Maintains a healthy work-life balance through effective prioritization, delegation, and time management.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience required for Sr. level. Our department prefers to only consider RNs with more than 5 years of experience.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients served by the assigned unit. Demonstrates an understanding of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess and interpret patient data to identify and address age-specific needs in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
  • Ability to work productively and effectively in a complex environment while managing multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.
  • Demonstrates exemplary clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills related to patient care.
  • Critical thinking skills necessary to independently apply and lead others in the application of the nursing process.
  • Mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina required for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to achieve and maintain this level.
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution selected from department, hospital, or system goals and approved by the Unit Director, or attainment and maintenance of a UPMC-approved nursing certification within one year of hire/transfer. Certification is not required for nurses holding a Master’s in Nursing or DNP. If a BSN is held, a Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of certification.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state where the facility is located or through a multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) license, where applicable.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required within one year of hire or transfer.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within one year of hire or transfer.
  • UPMC-approved nursing certification preferred.
  • Act 34 Clearance required.
