UPMC Altoona is seeking a full time Clinical Supervisor for the Williamsburg Family Practice! This position will work Monday through Friday, 8am – 4:30pm or 8:30am – 5pm.
The Clinical Supervisor is responsible for the administrative and clinical operation of the department. They provide optimal supervisory, educational, and counseling opportunities to the nursing personnel that they supervise. Assists faculty in providing an educational opportunity for the Family Medicine Interns and Residents on the unit. Actively participates in, coordinates, and evaluates quality patient care.
Responsibilities:
- PATIENT CARE:
- Determines the required and appropriate preparation of the patient for the physician examination.
- Assists the physician as indicated with physical exams and is present during the internal examination of all female patients.
- Assists the physician in explaining the nature of the patient’s illness and instructs patients requiring special diets, medications, treatments and/or procedures and schedules same.
- Triages and returns patient messages as appropriate.
- Orients all students and preceptors to AFP policies and procedures.
- PROCEDURES:
- Assists the physician during office surgery, biopsies, colposcopy, cryosurgery, sigmoidoscopy, wound dressing, splinting and physical exams including pelvic and breast; procures appropriate consent form.
- Complies with established occupational exposure policies.
- Performs urine catheterization, electrocardiography, nebulizer therapy, ear irrigation, audiometry, visual testing, tympanometry, and spirometry to include appropriate calculation, mounting, or charting.
- In absence of the Medical Technologist /Instructor, may perform:- Urine dip stick, and specific gravity.- Obtain blood specimens via finger stick, HGB, Glucose, and Lead levels.- Rapid Strep and Pregnancy Testing.- Obtain and process cultures for transport.- Prepare slides for KOH, wet prep, and UA.
- Participates in unit staff meeting with office personnel and faculty members once a month. Meets with supervisor and /or supervisors as designated. Participates in Clinical Staff Meeting monthly.
- Guides and directs staff members in provision of nursing care to assigned patient.
- Demonstrates the ability to maintain a patient-centered atmosphere on a unit which is goal-oriented in accordance with the individual patient’s needs in an effort to support him and his family and promote treatment leading to a maximized level of health.
- Facilitates orientation for first-year Family Medicine interns and residents to include office policy/procedures,and help with taching use of eclinical works (computerized charting)9. From the nursing perspective, assumes responsibility for direction given intern and resident physicians regarding procedure, immunization update, aseptic technique, interpersonal and technical skills, appropriate physical assessment and medication monitoring.
- CHARTING:
- Assesses need, observes and records patient vital signs to include: Temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure. Obtains height, weight, and head measurements as indicated.
- Obtains health history and or subjective complaint.
- Administers and records appropriate parenteral medications.
- Fax and or RE Rx orders to designated pharmacy as directed by physician and makes notation of each.in telephone encounter per protocol
- ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides for the overall management of his/her designated unit; directs the staff in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the direct care services and operational functions in accordance with sound administrative and fiscal principles and patient centered and goal-oriented nursing care.
- Assists in the development and updating of policies and procedures relative to the operation of the unit to include: (1) AFP Procedure/Policy Manual; (2) Fire & Safety; (3) Disaster; (4) Infection Control: Hospital Manuals; (5) MSDS3.
- Investigates incidents and assures that complete reports are appropriately documented and processed.
- Assesses emergency and/or unusual situations both on the unit and as reported to the unit and determines the course of action in accordance with Hospital Policy.
- Demonstrates responsiveness for the safety needs and well being of all patients and personnel on his/her unit.
- Maintains appropriate time scheduling for nursing personnel assigned to his/her unit to meet patient needs.
- Demonstrates the appropriate managerial techniques in the overall operation of his/her unit.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of corrective action relative to personnel performance.
- Inservices Residents, Faculty and Clinical Personnel on use and care of new diagnostic/medical equipment.
- Able to assist Residents, Faculty and Office Personnel with learning specific components of managed care, regulations, referral and forms.
- Assists the Medical Director with the determination of the ongoing and future areas of the patient care unit including the purchase of medical, surgical and pharmaceutical supplies. After consultation with the Medical Director, plans and projects budget needs. In cooperation with the Administrative Director, monitors materials received and charges incurred.
- Participates in interview and selection of prospective clinical personnel. Responsible for orientation, assessment and competency evaluation of new clinical personnel.
- Evaluates clinical personnel yearly or as required under the direction of arhs Human Resources
- Provides opportunities for staff’s personal and professional development. Evaluates required skills and inservices new policies or procedures.
- Engages actively in direct patient care and is knowledgeable and proficient in performing, assisting, or teaching the required skills as seen under the Charting, Patient Care, and Procedures section.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of one year’s experience in a hospital setting and 1-2 years’ experience in a Family Medicine physician’s office or ambulatory care setting to include laboratory competency and office surgery/procedures.
- Must have supervisory/management and teaching experience.
- Must be a graduate from an approved school of nursing; must hold a current license to practice nursing in the State of Pennsylvania
- Must satisfactorily complete the Nursing Department’s orientation program and probationary period
- Must hold CPR certification
- Must maintain current certification in a nursing speciality.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
