Gain hands-on patient care experience and build your clinical skills as a Casual Patient Care Technician—the perfect opportunity for nursing students looking to grow in a supportive healthcare environment!
We’re seeking a commitment of at least one shift per week, with opportunities for additional hours over school breaks.
Responsibilities:
- Assist patients with daily living activities, procedures, and therapies under RN supervision.
- Perform core nursing assistant tasks, including vital signs, blood glucose checks, I&O, and specimen collection.
- Conduct advanced skills as needed, such as phlebotomy, EKGs, Foley catheter removal, and point-of-care testing.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare teams and provide patient status updates.
- Maintain a safe and respectful environment, ensuring adherence to hospital policies and safety protocols.
- Support patient mobility, transport, meal assistance, and comfort measures.
- Document patient care accurately and complete clerical tasks as required.
- Educate patients and families on care instructions per RN direction.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and department projects.
- Continuously seek professional development through feedback, training, and self-review
Qualifications:

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One of the following:
- 1 year of healthcare experience, OR
- 6 months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency within 120 days, OR
- Enrollment in a PT/OT/PA or related healthcare program with one clinical rotation, OR
- Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.
- Completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class and basic system training.
- Strong communication skills; microcomputer experience preferred.
- EMT/Paramedic certification or enrollment preferred.
- Medication access limited to nurse distribution.
Certifications & Clearances:
- BLS/CPR (AHA standards) required within 30 days of hire.
- ACLS preferred
- Act 33/34/73
