UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the Cardiac Cath Lab!
This position is full-time, Monday- Friday 7am-3:30pm or 8am-4:30pm. Occasional on-call coverage required.

The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse and a key member of the care delivery team. Responsible for setting the standards for the level and quality of care, the Professional Staff Nurse holds responsibility, authority, and accountability for nursing care provision. This role involves managing and delivering patient care activities for a group of patients and their families, using independent judgment, communication, and collaboration with the team. The Professional Staff Nurse is a leader, partner, collaborator, and supervisor, maintaining collaborative relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The role also demonstrates a commitment to both the community and the nursing profession.

Build and Maintain Relationships: Develops productive relationships with both internal and external teams, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment to patients and colleagues. Promotes a culture of inclusivity and mutual respect by understanding cultural differences and fostering healthy relationships. Balances work and personal life, modeling safe work hours and healthy lifestyle habits. Communicates safety hazards and concerns to peers and management.

Patient Education and Staff Development: Applies adult learning principles (and child learning principles, if applicable) to educate patients, families, students, and new staff. Provides clear and appropriate guidance to patients and families throughout their care journey, including transitioning to other levels of care. Supports the growth of students and new staff, potentially serving as a preceptor, and encourages open dialogue and feedback to improve practices.

Nursing Process & Relationship-Based Care: Uses the nursing process within the framework of Relationship-Based Care to foster a healing environment. Develops individualized patient care plans in collaboration with patients, addressing physical, social, psychological, and spiritual needs. Demonstrates critical thinking and effective communication skills to coordinate care with the multidisciplinary team and ensure appropriate adjustments to care plans. Maintains detailed patient documentation to support team collaboration.

Professional Development & Collaboration: Takes ownership of professional growth and development to improve both practice and patient care. Actively participates in unit-based governance, goal setting, and change processes to enhance care quality and work environment. Responds positively to care team needs and participates in initiatives that improve patient care and clinical practices.

Quality Improvement & Patient Satisfaction: Engages in department or unit-specific quality improvement efforts. Identifies opportunities for enhancing care quality and patient satisfaction, and works collaboratively with colleagues and management to implement solutions. Utilizes research and evidence-based practices to drive improvements in clinical care, actively engaging in discussions on quality improvement during multidisciplinary rounds.
Qualifications:
The individual must demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care and interact effectively with patients of varying ages as specified by the assigned unit. They must understand the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and possess the ability to assess patient data, interpret relevant information, and address age-specific needs in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Requirements:
- Experience: Zero to two years of experience.
- Education: BSN preferred.
- Skills:
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary staff, other departments, and patients/families.
- Ability to work productively in a complex environment, manage multiple and changing priorities, and use specialized equipment effectively.
- Strong clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills related to patient care.
- Ability to exercise critical thinking skills and lead others in the application of the nursing process.
- Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
- Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
Flexible Shift Options:
UPMC offers a variety of flexible options, including programs for primarily night shifts or weekend shifts with premium pay differentials. Employees hired into or transitioning to these programs must have at least six months of nursing experience and may be required to complete orientation during regular business hours. If interested, please notify your recruiter during the interview process.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- UPMC-approved national certification is preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in the state where the facility is located, or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the facility’s state.
- CPR certification required per AHA standards, including both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- Graduate nurses must complete the licensure examination within six months of hire or within one year of graduation (whichever comes first).
- Although temporary permits are valid for one year from graduation, UPMC requires graduate nurses to take the licensure exam within six months of their start date or face potential termination or demotion, at the discretion of the business unit.
Certifications Required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Registered Nurse (RN) or Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
If the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, candidates must hold a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Employees working with an out-of-state NLC license must apply for licensure in the state where the facility is located within 60 days of changing residency.
