UPMC Hamot is hiring an Expert Professional Staff Nurse to join the PACU!
This position is full-time, Monday- Thursday 10:30pm-8:00am. No weekends or holidays.
Previous nursing experience required.
Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and nursing experience.

Sign-On Bonus Details (Full-Time status)
• $15,000 sign-on bonus available for nurses with over one year of experience

Purpose: The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN, Expert is a Registered Nurse who plays a key role in the care delivery team. They are responsible for setting care standards, managing patient care, and driving process improvements. This role involves leadership, collaboration, and supervision, ensuring effective communication and teamwork with physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Additionally, they demonstrate a strong commitment to the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
- Passion for developing others; precepts students, graduate nurses, and new hires. Analyzes clinical and behavioral situations to identify learning opportunities. Seeks feedback and applies continuous professional improvement.
- Supports continuous learning by sharing research, presenting, and supporting journal clubs. Uses Relationship Based Care to create a healing environment. Formulates daily goals and care plans involving the patient holistically.
- Practices solid communication skills, articulates patient’s condition, and negotiates care changes. Comprehensive patient documentation promotes caregiver communication.
- Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual issues. Incorporates national, business unit, and health system goals to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
- Creates compassionate, patient-focused experiences by building healing relationships. Builds and mends relationships within a healthy workplace framework. Role models cultural awareness, prevents and addresses horizontal violence and impairment.
- Maintains balance between work and personal life through prioritization and delegation. Identifies opportunities for clinical quality and workplace improvement. Applies evidence-based practice regularly.
- Serves on or leads teams for patient care innovations and workforce support. Role model in clinical expertise, teaching, specialized resource nursing, and evidence-based practice. Provides feedback to health care team and participates in nursing peer review. Promotes changes to enhance patient care and unit environment.
- Demonstrates advanced clinical assessment and analytical skills. Actively participates in shared governance and hospital-wide councils.
- Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 4 years experience. BSN required.
- Annual completion of a professional contribution approved by Unit Director and UPMC approved nursing certification required within 1 year of hire/transfer and must be maintained. Certification not required if Master’s in nursing or DNP is held. Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for certification if BSN is held.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills for age-specific patient care. Understands principles of growth and development over the lifespan. Assesses data reflective of patient’s status and interprets information for age-specific needs.
- Must obtain and maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation.
- Establishes and maintains positive relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families. Works productively and effectively in complex environments, handles multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
- Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and lead others in the nursing process. Mobility and visual manual dexterity required. Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within one year of hire/transfer.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) within 6 months of hire/transfer.
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
