Professional Staff Nurse (Newborn Assessment) – Mom-Baby Unit
UPMC Hamot’s Women’s Hospital is hiring a Newborn Assessment Nurse to join our Mom-Baby Unit.
The Mother-Baby Unit is a Level III nursery with 24 beds, offering family-centered couplet care. Our skilled nurses provide a wide range of maternal and infant care, including blood administration, IV medications, lactation support, and patient education. We prioritize trust, assess individual patient needs, and ensure a safe transition to parenthood and home.
Minimum of 3 years of inpatient nursing experience in the Maternal Child Health field required.
Title and salary will be determined based on education and experience.
Purpose
The Professional Staff Nurse (Registered Nurse) is a key member of the care delivery team. This role establishes care standards, assumes responsibility and accountability for nursing care, and manages patient care activities. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates leadership, collaboration, and supervision while working closely with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve desired outcomes. This role reflects a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Newborn Assessment Responsibilities

Performs initial and ongoing newborn assessments in accordance with hospital policy.

Obtains newborn vital signs every 30 minutes for the first two hours post-delivery.

Reviews newborn medications with caregiver(s) and administers medications per policy.
-
Applies newborn identification bands, security sensor tags, and PPID thermal bands.
-
Initiates the first feeding and provides breastfeeding support as needed.
-
Obtains admission weight and newborn measurements.
-
Completes newborn security photographs and footprints using CertaScan per policy.
-
Communicates newborn assessment findings promptly with the interdisciplinary care team.
-
Performs duties in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.

Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and interact appropriately with patients of varying ages as assigned.
- Understands principles of growth and development across the life span.
- Able to assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs.
- Provides care according to department policies and procedures.
- Has zero to two years of experience.
- BSN is preferred.
- Capable of establishing and maintaining positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary/support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
- Works productively and effectively in complex environments.
- Handles multiple and changing priorities, including specialized equipment.
- Demonstrates good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities related to patient care.
- Possesses critical thinking skills to apply and lead others in the nursing process.
- Has mobility and visual manual dexterity.
- Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.
- UPMC offers flexible scheduling options including night and weekend shift programs with premium pay.
- Employees must have at least 6 months of nursing experience to qualify for these programs.
- Orientation for these programs may occur during regular business hours.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
- Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first. Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.

Certified Breastfeeding Counselor within 12 months of hire
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
