UPMC Travel Staffingis seeking experiencedOperating Room Registered Nurses (RNs)with a minimum oftwo years of Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) experienceto join our growing team. Candidates must be willing to work40 hours per weekand completea minimum of 120 hours of on-call time per quarter

As a UPMC Travel Staffing nurse, you’ll benefit from professional flexibility and unique travel opportunities, including the possibility of rotating to a new hospital or unit every six weeks. Assignments are primarily withincardiovascular operating rooms across the UPMC system, offering exposure to diverse clinical environments. You’ll build your expertise while collaborating with nationally recognized physicians and advanced practice providers—and expand your professional network across one of the nation’s leading health systems.

Responsibilities 

  • Function independently following a one-day orientation, unless otherwise specified. 
  • Apply strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills in all aspects of patient care. 
  • Maintain professional relationships and communicate effectively within the clinical environment. 
  • Adhere strictly to all hospital and patient care policies and procedures, including patient confidentiality standards. 
  • Seek appropriate intervention from nursing staff, physicians, or other members of the healthcare team as needed. 
  • Actively pursue professional growth by enhancing knowledge, skills, and performance through feedback and self-assessment. 
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment by identifying safety hazards and adhering to aseptic technique and infection control standards. 
  • Utilize the nursing process to manage patient care, including assessment, interdisciplinary planning, implementation, evaluation, patient education, and discharge planning. 
  • Communicate patient status and changes clearly to physicians and other key members of the healthcare team. 
  • Prepare the operating room for procedures by setting up surgical instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. 
  • Assemble sterile and non-sterile equipment and ensure functionality prior to procedures. 
  • Perform sponge, needle, supply, and instrument counts in accordance with policy. 
  • Assist the surgical team with sterile gowning and gloving procedures. 
  • Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary care teams to deliver high-quality patient care. 
  • Demonstrate leadership and promote critical thinking in nursing practice when appropriate. 
  • Communicate identified educational and training needs. 
  • Maintain flexibility and availability for schedule changes based on unit needs. 
  • Provide basic psychosocial support and counseling to patients. 
  • Observe, report, and document changes in patient condition or behavior promptly and accurately. 
  • Prepare patients for surgery, including washing, shaving, and ensuring aseptic incision sites. 
  • Assist with specimen preparation, care, handling, labeling, and disposal for laboratory analysis; apply dressings as needed. 
  • Comply with all medication-use policies and procedures. 
  • Respond appropriately to emergent situations and initiate required interventions. 
  • Scrub into surgical cases as required by your role. 

Qualifications:

Position Requirements & Responsibilities

  • Demonstrated competence in professional operating room nursing practice
  • Minimum of two (2) years of cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) nursing experience required
  • Ability to circulate independently in the general operating room
  • Required ability to both circulate and scrub in the cardiovascular operating room
  • Primary assignment will be CVOR
    • Nurses may be assigned to other cases within their skill set as appropriate

Work Schedule & On-Call Requirements

  • Commitment to working 40 hours per week (80 hours per bi‑weekly pay period), including:
    • Day shifts
    • Night shifts
    • Weekend shifts
    • Holiday shifts
  • Willingness to work 8-, 10-, or 12-hour shifts, based on unit needs
  • Minimum of 120 on‑call hours per quarter required

Travel & Assignment Expectations

  • Ability to travel to all UPMC facilities across Pennsylvania, including (but not limited to):
    • Southwest and Northwest Pennsylvania and New York
    • Central and West Central Pennsylvania and Maryland
    • North Central Pennsylvania
  • After six months of employment, additional travel required to:
    • UPMC Chautauqua (NY) or
    • UPMC Western Maryland,
      depending on second‑state licensure
  • Willingness to rotate assignments every six weeks, with potential redeployment mid‑assignment

Technology & Systems

  • Experience with Cerner or Epic electronic health record systems preferred

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license required
    • Pennsylvania RN license required upon hire
    • New York or Maryland RN license required within six months of hire

* Current licensure must be valid in the state where the facility is located, or through a multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) license.
Nurses who change residency to a state where the facility is located must apply for licensure in that state within 60 days of residency change.

Certifications

  • CPR or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 30 days of hire
