Purpose:
The Senior Director, Strategy and Partnerships will play a critical leadership role in shaping UPMC’s future. This leader will help define and execute high-impact strategic initiatives that strengthen UPMC’s market position, advance enterprise priorities, and prepare the organization for continued transformation in a rapidly evolving health care environment. The role spans internally focused transformation work and externally focused growth initiatives, including strategic partnerships, mergers, joint ventures, affiliations, and other transaction models that enhance UPMC’s long-term strategic position.

The ideal candidate combines enterprise‑level strategic thinking with hands‑on experience driving complex, cross‑functional initiatives and external engagements, supported by strong financial acumen and a proven ability to assess strategic and financial impacts and evaluate risk. This individual will drive disciplined execution through strong project management, clear accountability, and consistent delivery of outcomes across multiple workstreams.

Responsibilities:

·       Partner with executive leadership. Work closely with UPMC’s senior leaders to translate enterprise priorities into actionable growth strategies, with a particular focus on business development, market expansion, and other opportunities that strengthen UPMC’s competitive position and long-term enterprise value. Serve as a trusted advisor and thought partner on complex, high-visibility initiatives.

·       Generate market intelligence and strategic insight. Develop a deep understanding of UPMC’s regional markets, service lines, competitive dynamics, market share, payer dynamics, industry trends, internal performance trends, and distinctive payer-provider position using qualitative and quantitative analysis. Leverage data and market intelligence to identify trends and evaluate UPMC’s competitive position. Translate insights into clear, actionable implications for executive leadership, helping identify growth opportunities, emerging risks, and strategic priorities that strengthen UPMC’s long-term position.

·       Advance enterprise transformation and execution. Lead complex, high-impact initiatives that require strategic thinking, financial discipline, executive communication, and cross-functional alignment. Bring structure and momentum to work that may include market assessments, volume projections, financial valuation, operational assessments, due diligence, antitrust analysis, negotiations, strategic narrative development, consensus building, and project leadership.

·       Lead strategic partnerships and transactions. Monitor the transaction landscape and identify, evaluate, structure, and implement partnerships that advance UPMC’s strategic objectives. This may include acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures, service agreements, affiliations, and other innovative collaboration models.

·       Build and develop high-performing teams. Recruit, mentor, and develop members of the Strategic Planning team and help lead interdisciplinary project teams across Finance, Marketing, Legal, Operations, and other functions. Foster a culture of intellectual curiosity, accountability, collaboration, and practical execution, with a focus on producing high-quality, analytically rigorous, executive-ready work.

·       Lead special projects. Take ownership of other high-priority initiatives as assigned, including projects that require discretion, judgment, executive presence, and the ability to navigate ambiguity.
