Professional Staff Nurse – TNICU
UPMC Hamot | Full‑Time
UPMC Hamot is seeking a compassionate Registered Nurse to join our Trauma Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (TNICU). This role is ideal for a team‑oriented nurse who thrives in a fast‑paced critical care environment and has a passion for learning and clinical excellence.
Schedule
- Rotating day/night shifts (50/50 rotation)
- 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM or 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Every other holiday rotation, with alternating holidays year to year
Unit Overview
The TNICU is a 16‑bed unit located on the second floor of the patient care tower. The exceptional care delivered in this unit supports UPMC Hamot’s recognition as:
- Level II Trauma Center
- Comprehensive Stroke Center
- AACN Beacon Award – Silver Level
Patient Populations
- Trauma
- Surgical patients
- Kidney transplants
- Neurosurgery
- Hemorrhagic strokes requiring neurointervention

Position Purpose
The Professional Staff Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the care delivery team and is accountable for setting and maintaining standards for the level and quality of patient care. This role carries responsibility, authority, and accountability for nursing care delivered to patients and families throughout the continuum of care.
The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates leadership through collaboration, partnership, communication, supervision, and the use of independent clinical judgment to achieve optimal patient outcomes.

- Builds productive relationships with patients, families, colleagues, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members
- Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, cultural awareness, and commitment to healthy work relationships

- Identifies and communicates safety concerns within the workplace
Patient Care & Clinical Excellence
- Applies the nursing process within the Relationship‑Based Care framework to create a healing environment
- Develops daily patient‑centered goals and comprehensive plans of care
- Demonstrates critical thinking in addressing clinical, psychosocial, safety, and spiritual needs
- Communicates patient status clearly to care team members and advocates for care plan adjustments
- Maintains thorough, accurate, and timely documentation
Education, Mentorship & Development
- Utilizes adult learning principles to educate patients, families, students, and new staff
- Supports onboarding and professional development; may serve as a preceptor
- Fosters a culture of open communication, feedback, and continuous improvement
Quality Improvement & Professional Growth
- Actively participates in unit‑based shared governance and quality initiatives
- Utilizes research and evidence‑based practice to improve patient outcomes
- Identifies opportunities for quality improvement and patient satisfaction enhancement
- Adapts to change and supports departmental and organizational initiatives
Qualifications:
Qualifications & Requirements
The Registered Nurse must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide age‑appropriate care to the patient populations served by the unit. This includes an understanding of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess, interpret, and respond to patient needs according to age‑specific requirements, departmental policies, and procedures.
Required Qualifications
- 0–2 years of nursing experience
- BSN preferred
- Strong clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical, and problem‑solving skills
- Ability to apply and lead others in use of the nursing process
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with:
- Executives and leaders
- Managers and physicians
- Advanced practice providers
- Ancillary and support staff
- Patients and families
- Ability to work effectively in a complex, fast‑paced environment with changing priorities and specialized equipment
- Physical ability to meet job demands, including:
- Mobility and visual/manual dexterity
- Frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients
- Sustained physical stamina for bedside care
Flexible Scheduling Opportunities
UPMC offers a variety of flexible scheduling options. In addition to traditional rotating shifts, special programs are available for nurses who wish to work primarily night shifts or weekend shifts, offering premium pay differentials.
- Eligibility requires a minimum of 6 months of nursing experience
- Orientation may be required during regular business hours
- Interested candidates should notify their recruiter during the interview process
Licensure, Certifications & Clearances
Required
- Current Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license in:
- The state where the facility is located or
- A compact state under the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR (AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire
- Registered Nurse (RN) license or Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
- Act 34 Clearance
Graduate Nurse Requirements
- Must complete the RN licensure examination:
- Within 6 months of hire or
- Within 1 year of graduation, whichever occurs first
- Temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation
- Failure to complete licensure within required timeframes may result in termination or demotion at the discretion of the business unit
Preferred / Required Within Timeframe
- UPMC‑approved national certification (preferred)
- ACLS within 1 year of hire or transfer
- NIH Stroke Scale Certification within 6 months of hire or transfer
