Sr. Professional Staff Nurse – Labor and Delivery
UPMC Hamot is seeking an experienced Senior Professional Staff Nurse to join the Labor & Delivery team!
Schedule Requirements:
- Day and night availability required
- Rotating shifts required
- On‑call shifts required
Position Purpose
The Senior Professional Staff Nurse (RN) is an integral member of the care delivery team and is responsible for setting standards for the level and quality of nursing care. This role carries responsibility, authority, and accountability for the provision of nursing care and leadership at the unit level.
The Senior Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care for a group of patients and their families through the use of independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members. This position embodies leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision while fostering strong relationships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes across the continuum of care.
The Senior Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community, the profession of nursing, and the advancement of high‑quality, evidence‑based practice.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence & Quality Improvement
- Identifies opportunities for clinical quality and workplace improvements.
- Applies evidence‑based practice as a routine component of professional nursing practice.
- Serves on or leads teams that implement innovations in patient care and promote a healthy work environment.
- Demonstrates advanced clinical assessment, analytical thinking, and decision‑making skills within the framework of Relationship‑Based Care.
Leadership & Professional Role Modeling
- Serves as a role model and recognized unit leader through clinical expertise, teaching, serving as a specialized resource nurse, and/or advancing evidence‑based practice.
- Promotes change that enhances patient care quality and the unit environment.
- Actively participates in shared governance at the unit level and serves on hospital‑wide councils.
- Provides timely, constructive feedback and participates in the nursing peer review process.
Education, Mentorship & Professional Development
- Demonstrates a passion for developing others by precepting students, graduate nurses, and new hires.
- Analyzes clinical and behavioral situations to identify learning opportunities that improve patient care.
- Seeks feedback on performance and actively engages in continuous professional improvement.
- Supports ongoing learning by sharing research, professional resources, unit presentations, and participation in journal clubs.
Patient‑Centered Care & Communication
- Applies the nursing process within Relationship‑Based Care to create a healing environment.
- Develops daily goals and individualized plans of care in partnership with patients and families.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills, clearly articulating patient conditions to care teams and advocating for necessary changes in care and practice.
- Maintains comprehensive, accurate documentation that promotes continuity and communication among caregivers.
- Incorporates national professional organization standards and health system goals to enhance patient safety, quality, and satisfaction.
Collaboration, Culture & Workplace Well‑Being
- Builds and maintains positive, respectful relationships among colleagues.
- Role models cultural awareness and actively prevents and addresses horizontal violence and impairment.
- Supports a healthy workplace through effective prioritization, delegation, and a balanced approach to work and personal well‑being.

Qualifications:
Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care to the patient populations served by the assigned unit.
- Knowledge of growth and development principles across the lifespan, with the ability to assess and interpret patient data to meet age‑specific care needs in accordance with department policies and procedures.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant nursing experience required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Must achieve a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level.
- Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on the annual performance evaluation to retain this role.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients and families.
- Ability to function productively in a complex healthcare environment while managing multiple and changing priorities and specialized equipment.
- Exemplary clinical judgment with strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem‑solving skills related to patient care.
- Ability to lead others in the application of the nursing process.
- Physical requirements include mobility, visual and manual dexterity, and stamina for frequent standing, walking, lifting, and positioning of patients.
Professional Development Requirements
- Annual completion of a professional contribution aligned with department, hospital, or system goals and approved by the Unit Director
OR - Obtention of a UPMC‑approved nursing certification within 1 year of hire or transfer, which must be maintained
OR - Certification is not required if the candidate holds a Master’s degree in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
- If a BSN is held, a Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of certification
Licensure, Certifications & Clearances
- Registered Nurse (RN) license:
- Current licensure in the state where the facility is located OR
- A multistate license issued by a participating Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state
- Employees working under an out‑of‑state NLC license who establish residency in the facility’s state must obtain in‑state licensure within 60 days of residency change.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR Certification:
- Must meet American Heart Association (AHA) standards
- Includes both didactic training and skills demonstration
- Required within 30 days of hire
- UPMC‑approved nursing certification preferred
