What You’ll Learn
As an EMT Intern, you’ll develop the skills needed to respond confidently in emergency situations, including:
- Patient assessment and emergency care techniques
- Basic life support and medical interventions
- Emergency vehicle operations and safety practices
- Effective communication with patients, families, hospitals, and first responders
- Teamwork and decision-making in fast-paced environments
You’ll progress from observation and training to actively participating in patient care under the guidance of experienced EMS professionals.

Upon successful certification, you’ll play a vital role in delivering high-quality emergency medical care by:
- Providing compassionate care to patients during emergencies and medical transports
- Delivering basic life support services
- Safely operating emergency vehicles
- Completing patient care reports and required documentation

Qualifications:
Applicants Must:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Hold a valid driver’s license
- Role includes operating a UPMC vehicle; MVR check required (violations within 36 months may impact eligibility)
- Successfully complete the FISDAP Entrance Exam
- Enroll in one of the following approved EMT training programs:
- Pennsylvania College of Technology (Williamsport) – EMT Registration
- Northern Pennsylvania Regional College (Tioga & Potter Counties) – Tioga County – NPRC EMT CLASS
- Meet all admission requirements established by the selected educational institution
Clearances
- Employment is contingent upon successful completion of all required background checks and clearances, including:
- Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance
- Act 34 Criminal Background Check
- FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 73), including any required renewals
Requirements for Successful Program Completion
Candidates are expected to obtain the following certifications and credentials during the training program and prior to employment as an EMT:
- National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification
- Pennsylvania EMT Certification with EMS Vehicle Operator (EMSVO) endorsement
- Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) Certification
- Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT)
- Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
- Hazardous Materials Awareness (HazMat Awareness)
- NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800 Certifications
