Status: Full-Time
Regular/Temporary: Regular
Shift: Day Job
Work Arrangement: RemoteWork Arrangement information
Facility: UPMC Health Plan
Department: IDFS
Union Position: No
Salary Range: $ 47.28-81.63 USD

As a Senior Strategy Consultant within Integrated Solutions, you will play a critical role in identifying, measuring, and evaluating initiatives designed to improve clinical, operational, and financial performance across UPMC. This position will serve as a key analytical partner to Integrated Solutions leadership and initiative teams, with primary responsibility for developing measurement methodologies, analyzing claims and utilization data, identifying, and sizing opportunities, and evaluating initiative performance.
The Senior Strategy Consultant will translate complex healthcare data into actionable insights, helping teams understand where opportunities exist, whether interventions are producing the intended results, and where additional focus may be warranted. The role requires strong analytical capabilities, financial and healthcare business acumen, and the ability to communicate findings clearly to clinical, operational, financial, and executive audiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Own measurement strategy for Integrated Solutions initiatives, including development of baselines, performance measures, measurement methodologies, and ongoing tracking approaches to consistently evaluate clinical, utilization, and financial results.
  • Conduct advanced claims, utilization, and financial analyses to identify and quantify opportunities across populations, sites of care, service categories, providers, and other relevant dimensions.
Identify new initiative opportunities through data, including patterns in utilization, cost, variation, site of care, avoidable utilization, and other drivers of healthcare performance.
  • Translate identified opportunities into actionable analyses, helping initiative teams understand the underlying drivers of performance, populations affected, potential areas of intervention, and expected impact.
  • Evaluate initiative performance and realized impact, distinguishing changes in utilization and cost from broader trends and helping leadership understand whether initiatives are achieving intended outcomes.
  • Develop consistent approaches for initiative measurement, creating repeatable frameworks, methodologies, and reporting standards that enable Integrated Solutions leadership to evaluate performance across a portfolio of initiatives.
  • Partner closely with clinical, operational, finance, actuarial, analytics, and health plan stakeholders to understand business questions, identify appropriate data sources, validate analytical approaches, and interpret results.
  • Perform detailed analysis of healthcare claims and related data, including medical cost, utilization, unit cost, member and patient populations, provider performance, service categories, and other relevant measures.
  • Synthesize complex analytical findings into clear, concise recommendations and executive-level insights that support prioritization and decision-making.
  • Develop dashboards, presentations, initiative measurement materials, opportunity assessments, and other deliverables that clearly communicate findings, trends, risks, opportunities, and performance.
  • Support the development of financial opportunity estimates and business cases for new and existing initiatives, including establishment of baseline performance and ongoing evaluation of realized results.
  • Proactively identify areas requiring deeper investigation and conduct root-cause analyses to explain performance variation or unexpected results.
  • Manage multiple analytical workstreams and initiative measurement priorities simultaneously, responding to emerging business needs while maintaining rigor and consistency in analytical methodologies.
  • Develop and maintain trusted working relationships across UPMC, frequently engaging with senior leaders, physicians, clinical teams, finance leaders, analysts, and operational stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to work with incomplete information, test hypotheses, challenge assumptions, and identify the additional analysis necessary to support decision-making.
  • Mentor analysts and other team members in analytical methodology, healthcare claims analysis, initiative measurement, and development of executive-ready insights.
  • Maintain knowledge of emerging healthcare analytics, value-based care, utilization management, payment models, and other industry developments relevant to Integrated Solutions initiatives.
  • Master new data sources, analytical tools, reporting platforms, and software necessary to support the work of Integrated Solutions.
Support Integrated Solutions leadership with special analyses and strategic projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Option 1
    • Master’s level degree in Business Administration, Health Administration or a quantitative field of study (e.g., mathematics, economics, sciences, finance, etc.) with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience (e.g., strategy, planning, business development, quantitative decision support, finance)
  • Option 2
    • Bachelor degree with 7 years of experience.
  • Prior experience should include project management (developing work plans, tracking progress, coordinating teams composed of individuals from multiple departments, completing deliverables, etc.); advanced analytics (manipulating complex datasets, interpreting data, communicating complex analytical concepts in easy to understand ways, etc.); business development (e.g., writing/authoring business plans for new operations); and negotiations with external audiences (e.g., secure affiliation agreements).
  • Experience in a consulting, investment banking, corporate or competitive strategy, or service line management environment is preferred; some operational experience is preferred.
  • Given the breadth of projects spanning all UPMC divisions, the candidate must exhibit knowledge and understanding across the full continuum of services and markets.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and PowerPoint, is essential.
  • The candidate should be comfortable with relational databases and have experience in advanced Excel capabilities (Pivot tables, programming macros, etc.).
  • Experience with commercial Healthcare data (Vizient, Sg2) and Government datasets, Power BI, Qlik/Qlik Sense, and data visualization techniques is preferred.
  • Experience with econometric analysis is helpful but not required.
